For rat and mice infestations, rodent baits seem to be a proven solution for controlling rodent populations. You will need to find the right combination of high quality food-grade ingredients with an active toxin. Contrary to popular belief, rats and mice prefer their food as humans do, with the finest ingredients. They will often refuse any food that is spoiled or insect-infested.
Anticoagulant rodenticides are highly trusted and successful solutions for rodent control. When rodents consume anticoagulants, they display extreme weakness due to blood loss, but their appetite and body weight are not directly affected. This “slow in action” bait is beneficial because the target rodent is unable to relate its illness with the bait it has consumed. This will prevent bait shyness. The rats and mice will keep coming to the food source as long as it is available.
First introduced in the U.S. in 1980, the anticoagulant Bromadiolone is proven to be one of the best actives in the market for controlling rats and mice, particularly Norway Rats, Roof Rats, and the typical House Mouse. It was created to control those rodents that were resistant to Warafin and other first-generation anticoagulants.
Bromadiolone is a second-generation anticoagulant and multiple-feed solution, while also one of the safest actives, resulting in low risk of secondary exposure. For instance, if you have a dog who consumes the infected rodent, studies show that a 22 lbs. dog would have to consume 4.4 lbs. of Bromadiolone to be affected. If non-target species (pets, people, wildlife, etc.) were to ingest the toxin, a simple antidote (vitamin K1) would be necessary.
An entire population of rats and mice can be controlled with just one to two feedings, with a mortality rate of 90 percent after just one feeding. According to Cornell University Cooperative Extension, Bromadiolone is significantly more effective at controlling both rat and mice populations than similar anticoagulant rat poisons.
